Why now
- Gemini Notebook (renamed from NotebookLM on Jul 16, 2026) still makes the best "two hosts discuss your sources" Audio Overviews. You can steer them with a custom prompt, and free accounts get several a day. (Google blog, plans)
- Readwise's Notion export writes every highlight into a Notion database automatically, append-only, so your Notion edits are never overwritten. (Readwise docs)
- The combination fixes the actual problem with read-later apps: you save plenty, highlight some, and remember almost none of it.
Who it's for
Anyone who reads for work and wants the week's ideas to stick, without a Sunday-night "review my notes" ritual that never happens.
What you get
- A Notion library of everything you highlighted, by source, with dates. It's searchable and yours.
- Every Friday, a 15-minute Audio Overview built only from that week's highlights and articles. It's prompted to connect ideas across sources and to push back on the weakest one.
- Over time, a notebook you can ask "what have I read about pricing this quarter?"
You'll need
| Tool | Plan you need | Current price (Oct 2026) | Link |
|---|---|---|---|
| Readwise Reader | Full Readwise (Lite excludes Reader and exports) | $9.99/mo billed annually, or $12.99 monthly | readwise.io/pricing |
| Notion | Free works | $0; Plus $10/member/mo | notion.com/pricing |
| Gemini Notebook | Free works (100 notebooks, 50 sources each) | $0; Google AI Pro $19.99/mo for higher limits | Gemini Notebook plans |
Setup
1. Read and highlight in Reader (Readwise Reader, 5 min to set up)
Install the Reader browser extension and mobile app. Save articles, PDFs, newsletters (Reader gives you a forwarding address) and YouTube videos to it. Highlight only what you'd want to hear again, and add a one-line note when you disagree with something. Those notes make the audio far better.
2. Turn on the Notion export (Readwise + Notion, 5 min)
In Readwise: Export → Notion → Connect, and authorize a private page. Readwise creates a Readwise database with views by document type, and new highlights sync automatically. Leave it running.
3. Add a "This week" view (Notion, 5 min)
In the Readwise database, add a view called This week, filtered to Last highlighted (or Last synced) is within the past week, sorted newest first. Column names vary slightly by export version, so use whichever date property your database shows.
4. Make the Friday notebook (Gemini Notebook, 10 min)
Every Friday:
- In Notion, open the
This weekview, select all rows and Export as PDF (or Markdown) with subpages included. - In Gemini Notebook, open a notebook called
Reading – <year>(one per year keeps you well under the source limits) and add the export as a source. Optionally, add the original URLs of the 2–3 best articles too. - In the Studio panel, choose Audio Overview → Customize and paste:
Use ONLY the source "Readwise export – week of <date>". Make a 15-minute briefing
for me. The listener highlighted these passages; their own notes start with "Note:".
1. Open with the three ideas that appear across more than one source.
2. Take my disagreements seriously: where I wrote a note pushing back, argue both sides.
3. Pick the weakest claim I highlighted and stress-test it.
4. End with two questions I should think about next week.
Name the source each time you quote it. No intro music talk, no sign-off.
Generate it, or use Generate later on the web if you're near your limit. Then listen in the Gemini Notebook mobile app on your commute.
5. Ask the library questions (any time)
Because the yearly notebook accumulates weekly exports, you can ask it things like What did I highlight about onboarding across all sources? Cite each.
Time to set up
About 30 minutes (estimate, not timed). Then roughly 10 minutes each Friday, plus the time it takes to generate the audio.
Cost
- Minimum: Readwise $9.99/mo billed annually ($12.99 monthly), with Notion Free and Gemini Notebook Free.
- Heavy listener: Google AI Pro $19.99/mo raises Audio Overview limits and sources per notebook.
Prices are list prices as of Oct 14, 2026.
Gotchas
- Readwise Lite won't work. Lite doesn't include Reader or exports. You need the full plan.
- The Notion export is append-only. Delete a highlight in Readwise and it stays in Notion. That's a feature for archives and a bug for tidiness.
- Notion doesn't feed Gemini Notebook directly. The weekly export is a manual step. It takes two minutes, but it is a step.
- Audio Overviews spend the most compute. Since Sep 2, Gemini Notebook usage is a compute budget that refreshes every 5 hours up to a weekly cap. Audio and Video Overviews use it fastest. The help center's numbers (such as 3 Audio Overviews a day on free) are a guide, not a guarantee.
- The hosts can overstate. Audio Overviews sometimes sound more confident than the sources. If an idea matters, check the cited passage before you repeat it in a meeting.
- Paywalled articles. This is for your personal listening. Don't share a notebook built from someone else's paywalled content.
Remix
- Team edition: share a notebook with your team and each person adds their weekly export, for a "what we read" Friday briefing.
- Writing fuel: instead of audio, ask the notebook for three essay outlines that connect this week's highlights.
- Skip Notion: add Reader article URLs straight to the notebook. You lose your highlights and notes, which are the best part.
Freshness log
- Oct 14, 2026: First published. Desk-checked against Readwise's pricing and Notion export docs, Notion's pricing page, and Google's Gemini Notebook rename post and plans and limits help pages.
